Garden Design Process
Various stages of a garden design project are shown below, not all stages are needed for every project and Lucy is always happy to discuss what is needed for each unique site, garden and client.
brief

an initial meeting with the client on site establishes the scope of the design, how the garden will be used, the level of maintenance they would like to subscribe to and the budget they have in mind.
From this meeting a written report will be drafted which is then sent to the client together with a design fee proposal for their approval / further thoughts.
site analysis

a topographical survey of a site together with a detailed site analysis establishes the basis from which a design may be conceived. Large sites may require a professional survey to be carried out.
ideas

in some cases it's helpful to draft sketch proposals based on the brief, survey and site analysis for further discussion and development before a masterplan is drafted. It can also be helpful to look at cost estimates as part of this stage to ensure the brief reflects a client budget.
design

once a brief has been agreed a detailed masterplan will be drawn to scale based on a site survey, together with sketches / photographs to help illustrate the design.
plants

based on a client brief, a planting plan is drawn to scale, noting the size plants will grow to over time which allows the accurate calculation of the quantity of plants required to achieve the desired result. From this a plant schedule may be compiled and top quality plants sourced from trusted trade nurseries.
tender

once the design and planting is agreed detailed drawings and specifications will be prepared from which invited contractors may tender. The overall costs of a project can be reviewed on receipt of quotations and specified works and so costs adjusted as needed.
project management

Lucy can oversee the tender process, the construction of the making of the garden in detail or act in an advisory capacity. Lucy's involvement at this stage is often determined by the size and complexity of the work being carried out and whether the contractor is the client's own builder or a landscape contractor.
ongoing collaboration as a garden develops and grows
by it's very nature a garden evolves and often the requirements of the people using it change. Lucy is always happy to be involved in reviewing and developing a garden.

consultancy - reviving planting schemes - mentoring
Specific to each client and their garden, Lucy offers a range of services in addition to designing a whole garden. These include one-off consultations, designing planting schemes and collaborating with clients on a maintenance schedule.
You may decide that a review of your existing garden and planting is what you are really wanting help with, perhaps a one-off collaborative consultation in your garden to discuss your ideas. Please do get in touch to arrange a meeting lucy@lucyroberts.uk.com.
