Garden Design Process
I offer a range of services from a one-off consultation to designing and project managing a garden through to it's realisation. I enjoy the role of a designer as a listener, an interpreter of ideas and desires, an imaginative collaborator, an innovative solution finder / problem solver in various measures specific to each client and their site. Design projects tend to follow each or some of the stages listed below, but you may decide that a review of your existing planting is what you are really wanting help with, or a one-off collaborative consultation to brainstorm your ideas, if that is the case please look at the garden revitalising page.

brief

an initial meeting with the client on site establishes the scope of the design, how their garden will be used and the level of maintenance they would like to subscribe to. From this meeting a written report will be drafted and a mood board compiled which is then sent to the client for their approval / further thoughts.
site analysis

a topographical survey of a site together with a detailed site analysis establishes the basis from which a design may be conceived. Large sites may require a professional survey to be carried out.
ideas

sketch proposals based on the brief, survey and site analysis may be drafted for further discussion and development.
design

once a brief has been agreed a detailed plan will be drawn to scale together with sketches / photographs to help illustrate the design.
plants

a planting plan drawn to scale noting the size plants will grow to over time allows accurate calculation of the quantity of plants required to achieve a desired result. From this a plant schedule may be compiled and top quality plants sourced from trusted trade nurseries.
tender

once the design and planting is agreed detailed drawings and specifications will be prepared from which invited contractors may tender.
project management

I can oversee the tender process, the construction of the making of the garden in detail or act in an advisory capacity. My involvement at this stage is often determined by the size and complexity of the work being carried out and whether the contractor is the client's own builder or a landscape contractor.
ongoing collaboration as a garden develops and grows
by it's very nature a garden evolves and often the requirements of the people using it change. I am always happy to be involved in reviewing and developing a garden.
